How to make sure you keep your crummy minimum wage job forever…Or- How becoming a Master at your crummy job is the key to getting a better one!

Business Confused 275Want to make sure you keep making minimum? Are you a perpetual “entry-level” employee?

Managers: Are you tired of the people on your front lines doing the bare minimum to get by day to day? Are you sick of paying people even minimum wage when they don’t even put in a minimal effort?

The answer is Mastery.

First for employees:

If you aren’t successful, in the words of my dear friend and mentor Larry Winget, “It’s your own damn fault!”

If you want to get ahead, stop bitching and moaning and do something. The most important thing you can do is to Master your job- whatever job you have right now.

I walked into one of the electronic big box stores to buy a new laptop. A very friendly clerk asked if he could help. I said, “Yes! I need a laptop that will handle video editing and play multimedia presentations smoothly.”

He started walking me down the aisle, flipping over those little spec cards and reading the technical information for each machine. I had no clue what he was talking about…

…and really- neither did he!

Finally I said, “Here’s how you can help me. Go find the smartest guy in this store who knows about computers.”

Later, I saw the same clerk leaning against a shelf joking around with another employee.

I hope they’re both happy. I wasn’t. I left.

If this clerk knew how to THINK Like a BLACK BELT, he would have a much different perspective on life. He’d spend his spare time:

  • Learning all the technical specs for every item on those shelves
  • Translating those specs into laymen’s terms
  • Understanding what the customer wants and how to satisfy those desires

Become a Master at your job and you demonstrate that you can learn, grow and develop on your own. You show your supervisors that you’re a self-starter. You display discipline and focus on the job.

You show that you’re ready for more responsibility and greater opportunity.

Now for employers:

Simple:

  • Provide quality training that develops expertise in each role
  • Recognize and reward learning and training both inside, and outside training related to the job
  • Provide opportunities to practice

You’ll develop better employees and you’ll identify clearly who should be kept on, who should be promoted and who should be let go.

Most of all- you’ll make more money.

It’s unforgivable when your front-line employees don’t know how to connect your customer’s needs to the products and services waiting for them on your shelves!

One lazy, ignorant employee can cost you customers every time he offers a blank stare in place of expertise.

Every Master on your floor can earn you a stream of loyal customers.

Peak Performance: The Process

FREE TLaBB Mindset Assessment Banner 460w

Peak Performance is a process…

I know- I say everything is a process! Well, unless they’ve already stuffed you in the box and thrown dirt on you, the reality is that life is a continual, ever-changing process.

Have you ever heard of the “Madden Curse?”

For years, top NFL players have been featured on the cover of the Madden NFL game by EA Sports. Inevitably, the cover player meets some kind of disaster or huge fall-off in production the following season.

That’s because the Madden cover is a recognition of a peak performance season. Most of these athletes are still among the top performers in the league, it’s just that their production may place them in the top 3, 5 or 10 instead of number 1.

Consistent peak performance is not a “one-off.” It’s the process of maintaining a consistent level of excellence. That means continual dedication to learning, growing and developing.

I always tell new Black Belts that it’s easier to earn your Black Belt than it is to keep it!

The achievement of the Black Belt is like that Madden cover season. It’s a mark of an extremely high level of performance. You’re being recognized for a once in a lifetime experience.

At the promotion ceremony I ask new Black Belts to reach up and pat themselves on the back. This goes on for about 2 seconds, then I say, “OK- now let’s get back to work!”

Peak performance is the development of “Mastery.” Mastery is not a static point in your development- it’s your commitment to the process of continual self-perfection.

Not every day is going to be a “peak” day. Not every year is going to be your best. Embrace the journey instead of the mile markers and there’s no end to the trip!

You can stop at any point, put up your feet and lounge around in your trophy room. Or- you can start training for the next challenge; your next adventure.

One more football story…

Tom Brady is consistently one of the top performers in pro-football. His work ethic and dedication to continual self-improvement is legendary…and that’s what keeps him on top.

During an interview he was asked how he stays motivated after so much success. His answer was that he once knew an aging equipment manager when he was playing at Michigan. This grizzled veteran had been part of several National Championships.

Brady asked him which championship ring was his favorite.

“That’s easy,” said the old vet, “the next one!”

That’s the key to peak performance!

“Perfection is not a destination- it’s a never-ending process! Enjoy!”

Innovation: The Art of Paying Attention

The four story Casa Grande is about 1,000 years old. A roof was added to prevent erosion in 1932, but guides say that souvenir hunting and tourists eroded the structure much more than the elements!

The four story Casa Grande is about 1,000 years old. A roof was added to prevent erosion in 1932, but guides say that souvenir hunting and tourists eroded the structure much more than the elements!

I yell a question every day to my 3 to 6 year old Little Dragon students:

“What are the two most important words in karate?”

Their answer:

“Pay attention!”

Those may be the two most important words in life and business too- particularly when it comes to innovation.

The business environment is moving at unprecedented speed…and it’s accelerating. You either change or die.

Innovation is no longer the domain of the top minds in your creative department. Every mind from the front lines to the C-suite had best be in full innovation mode.

On a recent trip to Phoenix I had the opportunity to visit 1,000 year old ruins left by the Hohokam people, ancient natives of the Sonora Dessert. These ruins, now called Casa Grande, were built of a mixture of sand, clay and limestone called “caliche.”

Building with caliche was quite an innovation from the basic wood and brush structures these people had lived in for thousands of years. How did they develop this technology?

They paid attention!

Originally they were simply trying to scratch out ditches to irrigate their fields. They realized that the soil was so hard just under the surface that despite their best efforts with sticks and stones, they could only excavate a couple of inches.

However-

As those shallow trenches filled with water, the soil would soften and they were able to scrape a little deeper.

They also noticed that the now soft mud they removed from their trenches would dry and harden into a nearly indestructible material- caliche.

Now they had material to build massive structures that could house their religious and astronomical activities.

Given the same situation, many of us, even with our modern tools, might have just surrendered to the hard soil and moved closer to the river! Even today, most people planting trees, shrubs and cacti on the dessert hire people with heavy-duty power tools to dig the holes.

If these guys weren’t paying attention some 1,000 years ago, we wouldn’t be visiting Casa Grande. We’d be wondering why they piled mud next to shallow trenches that go nowhere!

Most great innovations start with the seemingly small act of paying attention.

That process can be learned, taught and practiced. One of my favorite stories is how George de Mestral changed our world by paying attention.

Don’t know who he is? He was wondering over the all too common and annoying binding power of burrs that stuck to the fur of his dog. He checked out the stickers under a microscope and decided that nature’s little hooks could serve a great purpose.

He invented Velcro!

As 2012 winds down, pay attention to what’s around you. What needs can you fulfill? What small steps can you take to improve your product, your systems, your service…

…your life?

At the end of 2013, you may look back and realize that you did something really big. I guarantee that something will start with one small step…

…one moment of paying attention.

For the C-Suite: What you practice makes a difference

business executiveOn Wednesday I said that it’s not so much what you practice, but THAT you practice that’s important.

That’s true only to a point…

As you understand Beginner’s Mind you retain a sense of wonder and curiosity. You adopt the true mindset of the Master who never stops learning, growing and developing.

You also approach each new phase of life with the benefit of experience and wisdom. You’ve made mistakes and suffered defeat…and you’ve enjoyed victories along the way.

Beginner’s Mind does not mean you forget where you came from.

It’s not an expression of false humility. It’s simply the awareness that there is always room to grow. There are always new things to learn- new talents and abilities to develop.

A Master can choose which talents and abilities to cultivate. You have the benefit of experience to help you shape your next opportunity or adventure.

The genuine Master is a leader who is willing to share that experience and perspective with others. Sharing is the only way to attract willing followers and expand your power and potential.

Psychologists use the term “dedicated practice.” Research shows that high achievers always focus their practice to develop specific domain skills.

As a Black Belt, I call this “focused” or “mindful practice.”

You know which skills, talents and abilities will help you achieve higher levels of performance and achievement. Focus your practice and training in those areas that will best develop the skills to move you and your organization forward.

The Master combines the open and receptive qualities of Beginner’s Mind with knowledge, experience and awareness. That’s the definition of wisdom and that’s the mind of the Master.

The most productive people and organizations in the world understand the tremendous tangible value of continual personal and professional development. Case studies of Starbucks, Google and Microsoft reveal a purposeful culture that provides opportunities for growth and development for each individual in the organization.

Grow the individual and you grow your business.

“The sage does not hoard. The more he helps others, the more he benefits himself, The more he gives to others, the more he gets himself.” ~Lao Tzu

For the C-Suite: It’s not what you practice- it’s THAT you practice

Frayed Belt Close-upExecutives, business owners- or coaches and teachers…

What got you to the top is EXACTLY what’s going to keep you there…as long as you keep doing it!

For years I told my martial art students that it’s harder to keep a Black Belt than it is to earn one. Why?

People who achieve at high levels sometimes quit doing what got them there.

To earn a Black Belt you practice endless hours. You train. You’re constantly preparing for the next test.

Isn’t it the same in the corner office? To earn an office in the C-Suite you train, you grow, you develop your leadership skills to the highest level possible.

So what changes when you get to the top? The right answer should be: NOTHING!

The mind of the Black Belt or the CEO is the mind of the Master. The Master is one who has achieved a high level of competency in a given skill. You achieve this competency through dedicated practice, discipline, focus and perseverance.

As you perfect a chosen skill, you perfect your Self.

Any skill is expressed through the practitioner. It really isn’t the skill itself that changes, it’s the practitioner who develops into someone who is more capable of expressing that skill.

The Masters Mindset is really the Beginner’s Mind. It’s a mindset of continual and never-ending learning, practice, development and growth.

When I earned my first Black Belt, my Master gave me a brand new belt. It was deep, rich black- beautiful!

He told me that if I continued as a martial artist, I’d tie and untie that belt thousands of times. I’d be dragged across the floor in it. I’d infuse that belt with buckets of blood, sweat and tears.

Eventually, he said, the belt would wear, fade and fray.

As the belt frays, an inner core shows through. That core is white- the symbol of the beginner. The symbol of Beginner’s Mind- a mind eager for learning and growth.

Practice is never-ending. Approach each day with the beginner’s sense of wonder, curiosity and yearning for growth and you will continue to develop as a person- and as a leader.

Best of all, you’re engaging that process from a new and powerful perspective. More on that on Friday…Ask Me 460w
