How do I get everyone in my company to THINK Like a BLACK BELT?

For the rest of this week, Jim will answer some common questions about Black Belt Mindset in business…

Q: How do I get everyone in my company to THINK Like a BLACK BELT?

A: Train them. You train them in sales, customer service and safety- how much time do you spend training them in how to think?

Even the smallest companies spend time and money on training to install policies and systems from everything like, as I said, sales to safety. But how do you assure that those systems will work? A system, policy or methodology is only as good as the the people making it work.

If you look at it this way- the system is the software. The person is the hardware that’s going to run that software and that person’s mindset is the operating system that will run that software smoothly and efficiently.

How much did you invest in technology last year? How much did you invest in human technology?

Q: But you’re talking about some characteristics that some people will just not buy. What I’m saying is that some people just don’t want to be more disciplined or focused. Some just don’t want to improve themselves- they’re happy where they are. What do you do with those people?

A: Fire ‘em!

That’s not really a joke. I mean it.

What I’m talking about is so fundamental that if there’s no buy-in at this level, then use this training as a qualifier. If someone is unwilling to accept the basic concepts I’m teaching in Black Belt Mindset, that person is absolutely no good to you or your company.

Having said that, there are certain positions where you want satisfied performers. I’d argue that in most cases, however, those apparently satisfied people are getting their satisfaction elsewhere- the job is just a means to their ends. That’s OK as long as they’re not in a position that requires creativity or innovation and doesn’t carry a large amount of responsibility.

This might be the guy who you know has more potential, but is perfectly satisfied working the loading dock. He might be driven by the security of the job knowing that he’s providing a stable income for a child with special needs and that his job has a reliable schedule allowing him more time at home. He might be a solid and dependable employee. He may be disciplined and focused, but his motivation is elsewhere.

He might not want a leadership position or the responsibility. Now- the guy who is running the dock had better be trained with a different mindset. He’s looking for new efficiencies and ways to streamline the process. Where is this guy coming from?

When you train everyone with basic mindset characteristics on a continual basis, you’re identifying the employees who can and will embrace the process of continual self-improvement- and their improvement directly impacts the company in a positive direction.

Q: So train everyone?

A: Why not?

Training in focus might save you ten minutes of lost or wasted time per employee per workday. You know the average American worker is losing over two hours? Every day!

These aren’t the lazy people, it’s just the way our mind responds to distractions and interruptions. Add up what an extra ten minutes of productivity per employee per day will do for your bottom line.

Training in leadership not only identifies new leaders and strengthens current leaders, but it also creates a more streamlined workflow as employees at all levels can make decisions efficiently. It makes front line workers better able to serve as examples for new hires which makes the entire training process more efficient and effective- after all, one of your most powerful intangible assets is experience, right?

We can keep going, but I’m sure you see my point.

Q: So train everyone to THINK Like a BLACK BELT…

A: Everyone.
