Personal Development Myth Busting: You CAN’T have everything you want…Part 1

“You can’t always get what you want.

“But if you try, sometimes-

“You just might find-

“You’ll get what you need.”

Mick Jagger & Keith Richards

Sill pretty sound advice. Do a Google search for “How to have everything you want in life.” You’ll get over 830 million hits.

One of my favorites is typical of the mystical new-age bullshit you can waste your money on. MindpowerNews.com ran this post from e-book author David Cameron:

“So how do you get whatever it is that you want in your life, easily? Here is the formula for all creation of one’s reality. And trust me; it is as easy as you make it to be.”

Oh ya- it’s easy all right. Cameron reduces the fulfillment of all your desires to a simple 3 step formula:

Step 1: Ask

Step 2: The universe answers

Step 3: Receive

Yup, that’s all there is to it. Cameron explains:

“Don’t bother about how you will achieve your desire – the way will show up step by step automatically. Just be clear only on the end result, not necessarily on the way to get there.”

It seems every one of these crooks has to toss the salad with some pseudo-scientific gooblegook:

“Did you know that there are many Nobel Laureate quantum physicists that have proven without doubt that the act of observing is what creates that which is being observed?”

No- they didn’t. What physicists are saying is that on a quantum, or very small level, it’s impossible to conduct an experiment without the experiment itself affecting the outcome…usually on a very small level…which they measure and include in their final calculations. They call this “The Observer Effect.”

Here’s a simple example from Wikipedia:

“In physics the term observer effect refers to changes that the act of observation will make on the phenomenon being observed. This is often the result of instruments that, by necessity, alter the state of what they measure in some manner. A commonplace example is checking the pressure in an automobile tire; this is difficult to do without letting out some of the air, thus changing the pressure. This effect can be observed in many domains of physics…”

“…For an electron to become detectable, a photon must first interact with it, and this interaction will change the path of that electron.”

Let’s not get lost in physics. That’s what the gurus want. They think if they cite scientific data, no matter how incongruous, they’ll convince you that their beliefs are somehow validated scientifically.

Nope.

Here’s the plain fact:

If you want something, you’ve got to work for it. Here’s some science to go along with that:

P = W/T

This means power equals work over time. In the case of human endeavor, that means the harder you work and the more time you put in the greater your capacity to act or perform effectively.

Sounds kind of scientific, doesn’t it?

Look- there’s just nothing terribly scientific about your wants and desires. There’s nothing terribly scientific about your feelings and beliefs- in fact, that’s why we have metaphysics. Religion, faith and metaphysics aren’t meant to be scientific. These practices are supposed to give us some basis of acceptance for that which we can’t explain scientifically – yet. You’re entitled to believe whatever you like and if those beliefs help you apply yourself more effectively, so be it.

Just be careful those beliefs aren’t setting you up for disaster and most of all, be careful how much money and time you spend on someone else’s beliefs.

So what’s the harm in believing some of this stuff? We’ll cover that on Wednesday…

  1. Mr. Bouchard,

Here is a very vanilla fact for you. You don’t always have to work for what you want, but it sure helps things go smoother when you do.

I really did want an ice cream cone yesterday, but didn’t bother to ask because it was Mom’s special day, not mine. I was super happy when later in the day she suggested that Pop drive us to the ice cream store. I was disappointed when we went to place our order and I saw that there was no strawberry ice cream on the menu, so I asked if we could go to the other ice cream store one mile down the road. Mom & Dad said yes and I got the strawberry ice cream I wanted. If I hadn’t done the work of voicing what I wanted I would have been stuck with vanilla ice cream while dreaming about strawberry ice cream. But…

Sometimes results do happen without the work, too, Mr. Bouchard. It’s kind of like that Oberserver Effect you talked about. Nana Whacky likes to say “attention is magic”. Sometimes the magic is so powerful that we receive because we believe.

When we got to the second ice cream shop I had been thinking how happy chocolate sprinkles would make me but I didn’t want to ask my parents for them because they were already being generous about driving to the other store. You can only imagine my joy when the lady handed me my ice cream cone asking “You wanted sprinkles on that, right?!” She had made a mistake when putting together our order and she accidentally loaded my ice cream with them without even knowing if I’d like them!!

It happens, Mr. Bouchard. Sometimes you only have to be in alignment with your dream, believe it can happen and then remember to have a big napkin to wipe the drips off your chin.

There is no need for spending money or time on special programs. It’s as simple as dream – do – have.

    With Faith,
